Scenic Motorcycle Riding with the Kindle Paperwhite

The Kindle Paperwhite

There are so many times when I have been riding and wished I had a better way to see my routes, the Kindle Paperwhite may be my answer. I was skeptical at first and did not think this little six inch screen would work for me, well I was proven wrong. I can easily read the screen in full sunlight or the dark of night. One thing I really like about the device is how long the battery will last,  charged last week, been on several rides and the battery meter is only down to half. To mount this on my motorcycle I just use one of my magnetic tank pouches that I have been using to hold my printed routes. This small tablet will fit in most any tank bag or handlebar mount.

The Journey

The journey to get our books and printed routes formatted for the Kindle Paperwhite was a long one. I am very meticulous when it comes to my books and routes, a great many years went into getting the format and layout right. I wanted to make sure my full collection of printable routes and books displayed correctly.  Well I can finally state that the journey has been completed and all the electronic versions of the books and printable routes meet my standards.

Pictures

Here a few pictures showing what the books and printable routes look like on the Kindle Paperwhite.

Getting files onto the Kindle Papwerwhite

To get the books on the Kindle Paperwhite is a fairly easy task. I can copy the books and routes to the Kindle using my Android phone or computer. All I have to do is plug in a usb cable to the Kindle and plug the other end of the cable into my phone or computer. The Kindle shows up as a storage device that I can copy the files onto, I put all files in the documents folder on the Kindle. Here are the steps I take

1) Connect the Kindle to your computer/android phone with a USB cable

2) Locate the “documents” folder on the Kindle

3) Copy the PDF file from the computer/Android phone to the Kindle “documents” folder

That’s it, just 3 simple steps.

A great tool

The Kindle Paperwhite is a great tool for enjoying the back roads, there is one problem that happens after 10 minutes of not using the device. The screen will go to one of the built in screen savers and the only way to get the display back is by pressing the power button. I wish that this did not happen, but this is built into the device and can not be disabled.  Reminds me of finding a great road only to have the road turn to gravel after driving for several miles. The Kindle Paperwhite is a device I will continue to use and help me plan my rides, just not a device to use while actively riding. Well the journey continues, I keep looking for the great back roads and devices that can help along the journey.

You can find all of our electronic versions of our books here  . There are a full two pages of great scenic back roads rides to enjoy.
